Troops of Operation Enduring Peace (OPEP) have recovered the body of a Fulani herder who was killed by unidentified assailants while grazing cattle in Bassa Local Government Area of Plateau State.
Intelligence sources told Zagazola Makama that the incident occurred at about 4:40 p.m. on July 31 around the Kimis area of Bassa LGA.
The sources said troops of Sector 1 OPEP responded to a distress call reporting an attack on a herder identified as Mohammed Rabo.
On arrival at the scene, the troops found the victim dead, while the attackers had fled before security personnel reached the area.
The body was recovered and subsequently handed over to the deceased’s family for burial in accordance with local customs.
In a related development, the troops recovered 50 cattle belonging to the slain herder and handed them over to his father, Alhaji Rabo, in the presence of Ardo Adamu Dabo, a Fulani community leader, to prevent the livestock from being stolen or becoming a source of further tension.
Security sources said troops have launched a manhunt for the unidentified assailants, while patrols have been intensified across the area to track down those responsible and forestall any reprisal attacks.
The latest incident is part of a series of attacks recorded in Bassa Local Government Area, where Operation Enduring Peace has continued to sustain security operations aimed at protecting both farming and pastoral communities and preventing further escalation of violence.
