Troops of the Nigerian Army have arrested a serving soldier for allegedly conveying illicit drugs in Oshimili South Local Government Area of Delta state.
Security sources said the suspect, attached to 14 Field Engineer Regiment, was apprehended at about 5:30 p.m. on March 20 during an operation around Head Bridge in Asaba.
The sources said troops of 63 Brigade Garrison, while on routine “Operation Checkmate,” intercepted the soldier in a vehicle carrying a bag containing assorted hard drugs.
“Preliminary investigation revealed that the soldier abandoned his duty post at the arms store and was conveying the illicit substances to a suspected drug dealer in Asaba,” the source said.
The suspect is currently in custody, while efforts are ongoing to apprehend other individuals linked to the illegal activity.
The sources said the arrest illustrates the military’s zero tolerance for indiscipline and criminal conduct among its personnel.
They added that appropriate disciplinary and legal actions would be taken following the conclusion of investigations.
