The victims were part of a group of hunters who had gone into the forest for what was described as a hunting exhibition when they were attacked by the assailants, who were in large numbers and wielding sophisticated weapons.

The sources identified one of the victims as Nura Usman, 30, of Magonho Village, while the second victim, also male, is yet to be formally identified.

“The bandits ambushed the hunters at close range, shot two of them dead, while the rest managed to escape and reported the incident at the Tangaza Divisional Police Headquarters,” the sources stated.

It added that upon receipt of the information, troops from the  nearby Army Forward Operating Base (FOB) and other security agencies were immediately mobilized to the scene.

However, before the arrival of troops of Operation DANSAN YANMA, the attackers had already fled the area,” the sources said.

The corpses of the deceased were evacuated and deposited at a hospital in Tangaza, while intensive patrols and manhunt operations have been launched across the forest and surrounding communities.
