Barkin Ladi Attack in Plateau increases after inflammatory remarks by Chairman of the Berom Educational and Cultural Organization (BECO)
Meanwhile, the recent escalation was attributed to past inflammatory statement made by some community leaders which served as a trigger for reprisal attacks. For example, the recent escalation of violence in Barkin Ladi Local Government Area of Plateau has been linked to inflammatory remarks allegedly made in January by the Chairman of the Berom Educational and Cultural Organization (BECO), Foron District.
The chairman was captured in a viral video while addressing mourners after an earlier attack in the area, where he made statements that many residents and stakeholders described as provocative.
“We have been pushed to the wall,” he said. “I swear to God, we will not attack them, but we will crush them. It’s only crossing, it’s a work over.”
He further lamented what he described as insecurity and hardship in the community. “In our land, we cannot go freely. We cannot go to the farm. It is unbearable,” he said.
In the footage, he declared that after the burial of the slain resident, the Fulani pastoralists should not be seen in the community. After his burial tomorrow, we don’t want to see any Fulani here,” he said, repeating the statement.
Although he noted that the community did not want to take the law into its own hands, he added: “If I die today, my spirit is alive. There are gentlemen who will continue from where I stop. And they will fight.”
Residents told Zagazola that tensions rose significantly in the days following the remarks, with the Fulani being attacked anytime they passed through the community.
“Since he made that statement, the Berom Militia have been carrying out targeted attacks against our people, livestock and livelihood,” one Fulani elder said.
“Such public statements perceived as threats or calls to exclusion can aggravate fragile situations and embolden reprisals.
Stakeholders have called for thorough investigation of all recent incidents and for responsible leadership to prevent further deterioration of security in Plateau state.
