Boat mishap death toll rises to 24 in Nguru

The death toll from the recent boat accident involving passengers from Jigawa State has risen to 24 following the recovery of additional bodies in Nguru area of Yobe State.

 

Zagazola Makama gathered that divers on Sunday recovered eight more corpses 

from the scene of the mishap, which were evacuated to the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Nguru, where medical personnel confirmed them dead.

 

The sources said that three other victims earlier rescued alive were traced to FMC Nguru, where two were treated and discharged, while one remained on admission and was responding to treatment.

 

“With the latest recovery, a total of 27 persons have so far been evacuated from the incident, comprising 24 confirmed dead and three survivors,” the sources said.

 

Further clarification established that the location of the accident fell within Nguru area of Yobe State, resolving earlier jurisdictional concerns surrounding the incident.

 

The situation was said to have been brought under control following the arrival of security forces and the Nguru Local Government Chairman, alongside peace persuasion efforts and interventions by community and religious leaders.

 

The mishap occurred when a canoe conveying passengers from Adiyani village in Guri Local Government Area of Jigawa State capsized while travelling towards Nguru after market activities.
