Eid-el-Fitr 2026: Nationwide Celebrations Marked by Peace, Order, and Enhanced Security Coordination

Across Nigeria, the 2026 Eid-el-Fitr celebrations concluded successfully on March 20, as Muslim faithful observed the end of Ramadan in an atmosphere largely characterized by peace, order, and heightened security awareness. From the northern states to the southern coastal regions, security agencies worked in concert to ensure that millions of worshippers could participate in prayers and post-prayer celebrations without incident, reflecting improved coordination, proactive intelligence, and the resilience of communities in the face of persistent security challenges.
In Kano State, one of the northern epicenters of Islamic religious life, security agencies reported a smooth Eid celebration. At Kofar Mata Eid Praying Ground, where Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf and HRH Sanusi Lamido Sanusi joined thousands of worshippers, robust crowd control measures were implemented, ensuring orderly entry, prayers, and dispersal. The Kano State Police Command noted that the overall environment remained calm, with patrols and monitoring sustained throughout the day.
Similarly, in Katsina State, Eid prayers were conducted peacefully across all 34 local government areas. Security coverage was comprehensive, reflecting a multi-layered approach that included foot patrols, vehicular patrols, and intelligence-led monitoring to deter potential threats. No untoward incident was reported, and congregants dispersed in good order.
In Borno State, the Eid prayers were observed at designated grounds in Maiduguri and across the 26 other local government areas of the state. Ramat Square in Maiduguri hosted the main prayer session, commencing at 0930 hours and concluding at 0950 hours. Key dignitaries, including the Vice President, Kashim Shettima, Governor Babagana Umara Zulum, members of the State Executive Council, and national legislators, attended the service.
The Chief Imam prayed for lasting peace and coexistence, a sermon resonating in light of the week’s triple bomb blast that led to the suspension of the annual Durbar festival. Security agencies, including the police and sister agencies, deployed Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) teams to sweep prayer grounds and coordinated enroute security for VIPs. Reports from state intelligence operatives confirmed a hitch-free celebration, underscoring the effectiveness of the layered security measures.
Other northern states such as Adamawa State, Bauchi State, Gombe State, Zamfara State, and Kebbi State reported similar outcomes. Joint patrols with multiple security agencies, active monitoring of amusement parks and public spaces, and real-time reporting ensured the safety of congregants and prevented potential criminal activities.
In Zamfara, a state grappling with banditry, authorities maintained continuous patrols and surveillance, with hourly situation reports ensuring real-time monitoring.
Likewise, in Benue, joint convoy patrols involving multiple agencies were deployed to deter criminal activities and reassure residents.
In southern Nigeria, states like Lagos State witnessed massive turnout at Eid prayer grounds. At Dodan Barracks in Obalende, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu performed the 2-rakat prayers under elaborate security arrangements.
The Lagos State Police deployed comprehensive human and traffic control measures, ensuring unhindered flow for the congregation. Security agencies patrolled the entirety of the city, guaranteeing a peaceful observance. No untoward incidents were reported across other designated prayer grounds in the state.
In the South-East and South-South, states including Imo State, Abia State, Cross River State, Bayelsa State, Delta State, and Ekiti State reported hitch-free celebrations. In Imo, intensive patrols within and outside Owerri ensured proactive threat prevention. Delta State deployed standby personnel from the Police Mobile Force and Counter-Terrorism Unit at strategic locations, complemented by intensive vehicular patrols and surveillance. The Cross River State Police Command highlighted comprehensive pre-, during-, and post-prayer security coverage, ensuring safety of all congregants and monitoring of public spaces where celebrations extended into recreational activities.
In Osun State, Eid prayers at various grounds proceeded without incident, supported by strategically deployed personnel to guarantee a hitch-free celebration. Similarly, Bayelsa reported peaceful dispersal of worshippers and calm monitoring conditions.
Across all regions, it was noted that public cooperation was integral to the successful Eid observance. Worshippers adhered to guidelines on orderly conduct and respected security measures, reinforcing the effectiveness of intelligence-led policing and community engagement strategies.
Zagazola attribute the peaceful outcome largely to improved intelligence gathering and preventive policing. The pre-emptive deployment of personnel, coupled with strategic positioning of rapid response units, helped deter potential threats and ensured swift intervention capability. In several states, commanders emphasised “show of force” operations, designed to project authority and discourage criminal elements from exploiting the festive period.
The combination of visible security presence, rapid response capabilities, and community compliance contributed to a cohesive and safe environment, where citizens could freely celebrate without fear or disruption. Beyond security deployments, public cooperation also played a vital role. Community leaders and religious authorities encouraged adherence to security guidelines, orderly conduct and vigilance, contributing to the overall success of the celebrations.
Despite the positive outlook, Zagazola caution that the calm recorded during Eid-el-Fitr does not eliminate underlying security challenges.
While challenges persist, the peaceful conduct across states offers a strong indication that the country’s security architecture, when properly coordinated, is capable of delivering stability.
Sustaining this momentum will require continuous investment in intelligence, community engagement and institutional collaboration to ensure that calm periods evolve into lasting peace.
