FACT CHECK: Video from DR Congo falsely described as terrorists invasion in Ibadan
A video wherein some people are seen running helter skelter along a major road had been attributed to terrorists’ invasion of Ibadan, Oyo state capital….
In the video, the background voice was shouting “they have entered our community”.
Some of the social media users who posted the video claimed that “Fulani terrorists” purportedly attacked a community in Ibadan.
On May 22, 2026, an X user, @Somtolism7, with over 12,000 followers, posted the video with the caption thus: “Just in : Fulanis terrorist just stumbled another community in Ibadan 💔💔💔💔”. (archived here).
The video has generated over 600,000 views, 4,900 likes, 2,200 reposts, and 300 quotes.
A Facebook user — Joining — with 554,000 followers, posted the same video with the caption: “HAPPENING: There’s an invasion by Fulani Terror!sts into a community in Ibadan Oyo State, and people are running for their lives”. (archived here)
The Facebook video generated over 900 likes, 730 comments, and 500 shares.
The video was shared online following the abduction of schoolchildren and teachers from three schools in Oriire LGA in Ogbomoso, Oyo state, on May 15.
VERIFICATION
CableCheck analysed key frames from the viral video on Google Lens. Some of the results showed that the video has been on the internet since May 8 and was shared by some Congolese social media accounts.
On May 8, a Congolese blogger, congoyetu_, posted the video on Instagram with the caption suggesting that there was panic in Biakato in Mambasa territory of Democratic Republic of Congo following rumours that Allied Democratic Forces (ADF) rebels were in the city.
“Panic in Byakato, in the territory of Mambasa, after rumors indicating the presence of the ADF in the city,” the French caption of the Instagram post was translated to English.
On the same day, a Congolese media platform — Congo DRC News — posted the same video on Instagram.
The video was captioned with a short news report stating that residents of Biakato town were fleeing the community over reports of the presence of ADF elements.
News reports also confirmed that ADF fighters attacked Biakato town and killed at least 12 people, which forced residents to flee their homes on May 7, 2026.
VERDICT
The video used to suggest that terrorists have purportedly invaded Ibadan, Oyo state capital, is from DR Congo.
