Farmers affected by farmland destruction and an assault on a farm owner in Marit have received ₦1.6 million in compensation following a meeting and assessment involving farmers and herders.
Security sources said the payment was made on Oct. 21, 2026, following an incident on Oct. 5, 2026, involving the destruction of farmland and an assault on the owner in the community.
The sources said the compensation was agreed upon after consultations and an assessment conducted with representatives of the farming and herding communities.
Of the total amount, ₦1.55 million was paid to cover the destruction of farmland, while ₦50,000 was allocated to settle the victim’s hospital bills.
The intervention was aimed at addressing the grievances arising from the incident and promoting peaceful coexistence between farmers and herders in the area.
During the engagement, herders were warned against farmland destruction and attacks on farmers, with security authorities stressing that anyone found culpable would face the full weight of the law.
The authorities also urged members of both communities to resolve disputes through established channels rather than resorting to violence or actions capable of escalating tensions.
The compensation arrangement is expected to help ease tensions and reinforce efforts to prevent further disputes between farmers and herders in the area.
