A suspected Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) fighter has surrendered to troops of the Nigerian Army and Hybrid Forces at Hambagda in Gwoza Local Government Area of Borno State.
Security sources told Zagazola Makama that the surrender occurred at about 9:20 p.m. on Oct. 24 at the Hambagda Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camp along the Gwoza–Limankara Road.
The sources said troops of the 192 Battalion (Mechanised), working alongside Hybrid Forces, received the surrendering fighter for preliminary investigation.
Initial findings reportedly indicated that the suspect had escaped from the Grazah terrorist enclave in the Mandara Mountains.
Items recovered from the suspect included one AK-47 rifle, one magazine, 28 rounds of 7.62mm special ammunition and ₦500 in cash.
The suspect remains in military custody for further investigation and necessary action.
The development comes amid sustained military operations targeting terrorist enclaves and movements around the Mandara Mountains and other parts of Borno State.
Security forces continue to maintain pressure on insurgent groups while receiving individuals who abandon terrorist activities and surrender to authorities.
