Mali: GTIA Kamandjan Returns to Kati After Successful Mission in Kidal
After 19 months of intense operational engagement in the northern region under Sector I of Operation Maliko, the Groupement Tactique Interarmes (GTIA) Kamandjan has successfully completed its mission and returned to Kati.
Deployed on October 9, 2023, GTIA Kamandjan played a pivotal role in the recapture of Kidal on November 14, 2023—a landmark event that is now regarded as a historic achievement for Mali.
The soldiers arrived in Kati on the night of Sunday, November 24, 2024, and were received at the Place d’Armes by the Commander of the Defense Zone of the 3rd Military Region, Colonel-Major Mamadou S. Koné.
Families, residents of Kati, and Bamako gathered en masse to honor the returning soldiers for their valor and dedication to the fight against terrorism. While some families rejoiced at the safe return of their loved ones, others mourned the absence of those who made the ultimate sacrifice.
In his address, Colonel-Major Mamadou S. Koné paid tribute to the fallen soldiers and wished a swift recovery to the injured. Speaking on behalf of the nation’s leadership, he commended the professionalism and determination of the troops, emphasizing the critical role they played in restoring stability to the region.
Colonel-Major Koné highlighted that November 14, 2024, would forever be etched in Mali’s history as the day Kidal was liberated. He affirmed that the success of the Malian Armed Forces (FAMa) has restored confidence among the population, enabling them to resume their daily activities across the country. He urged the troops to maintain unity and cohesion to ensure the continued safety of Mali’s citizens and their property.
Lieutenant Ibrahim Fané, the mission leader of GTIA Kamandjan, lauded the discipline and commitment of his troops during their deployment in northern Mali. He reported that during their operations, the team neutralized dozens of improvised explosive devices (IEDs), thwarted several ambushes, and eliminated numerous terrorists. Weapons and other explosive materials were seized during the mission.
He noted the challenges faced along the journey, describing the vigilance required to overcome them. Lieutenant Fané emphasized that the liberation of Kidal was not only a victory for the FAMa but also for the entire Malian nation.
The Lieutenant also highlighted the positive reception from local communities, who he said were supportive of the FAMa’s efforts. He expressed gratitude to the Malian people for their warm welcome upon the unit’s return, a gesture he said reflected the population’s trust in the armed forces.
While celebrating their achievements, Lieutenant Fané acknowledged the natural death of a brave non-commissioned officer during the mission. He assured the families of soldiers that the country’s leadership remains committed to their welfare.
The ceremony concluded with prayers for lasting peace in Mali. Families of the troops praised the government for enhancing the operational capacity of the FAMa, reaffirming their confidence in the armed forces to secure the nation.
