A Max Air flight carrying the Deputy Governor of Borno State, Dr. Usman Kadafur, and over 70 passengers made an emergency landing at the Maiduguri International Airport on Wednesday after one of its engines caught fire shortly after takeoff.

Zagazola Makama learnt from Max Air staff that the incident occurred approximately 10 minutes into the flight, which was en route from Maiduguri to Abuja. Preliminary reports suggest that the aircraft struck a bird, causing damage to one of its engines and resulting in a fire.

The pilot swiftly responded to the emergency by shutting down the affected engine and safely maneuvering the aircraft back to Maiduguri. All passengers and crew members on board were unharmed, and emergency protocols were effectively implemented.

Max Air promptly dispatched a replacement aircraft to Maiduguri to convey the stranded passengers to Abuja. The replacement flight departed Maiduguri at about 11:00 p.m., ensuring minimal disruption to passengers’ travel plans.

Bird strikes are a known risk in aviation, especially during takeoff and landing phases. Airlines are urged to conduct regular wildlife hazard assessments and implement bird control measures around airports to reduce such incidents.

The flight is currently undergoing repairs at the Muhammadu Buhari International Airport Maiduguri.
