Mwaghavul militiamen kill 1 Fulani herder, attack cattle in Mangu

Suspected Mwaghavul militiamen have reportedly attacked Fulani herders around Lawet and Lamor in Pushit District of Mangu Local Government Area of Plateau State, killing one herder and shooting at cattle.
The attack occurred at about 8 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 26, 2026, near the Mangu–Pankshin boundary.
Security sources told Zagazola Makama that the attackers allegedly deployed tear-gas canisters before opening fire with automatic rifles, reportedly including AK-47 rifles.
The attackers reportedly targeted cattle that had already been tied inside enclosures at the residences of the herders.
One Fulani herder was reportedly killed in the attack, while the exact number of cattle killed or injured was still being established as of Sunday.
The incident bears similarities to the recent attack around Alohom in Mangu Halle Ward, where three young Fulani herders were killed and dozens of cattle were reportedly shot dead in an attack also said to have involved the use of tear gas.
The latest incident has heightened concerns over the safety of herders and livestock in communities around the Mangu–Pankshin boundary, particularly amid the continuing cycle of attacks and reprisals in parts of Mangu.
Security agencies are expected to investigate the incident, establish the circumstances surrounding the killing, identify and track down those responsible and take measures to prevent further attacks on vulnerable communities and livestock.
The latest attack comes against the backdrop of several reported incidents involving killings, livestock destruction and reprisal attacks in Mangu in September, underscoring the need for sustained security presence and early intervention in vulnerable communities.
