Niger Buries Fallen Soldiers Killed in Agadez Ambush

Eleven members of the Nigerien Defence and Security Forces out of the 15 that were killed were laid to rest today at the Muslim cemetery in Agadez urban municipality, following an ambush near Ekadé Malane.

The burial ceremony was attended by the Chief of Staff of the Armed Forces (CEMA) and the Chief of the Army Staff (CEMAT), who arrived in Agadez this morning to pay their last respects to the fallen soldiers.

The deceased, all members of the Special Response Battalion (BSI) under Zone N02 of Agadez, lost their lives in an attack yesterday morning while on patrol near the military post in Inanbagarett. Two other soldiers, who survived the ambush with injuries, are currently receiving medical treatment.

Security sources indicate that the attack occurred near the border with Algeria, a region frequently used by non-state armed groups engaged in various illegal activities. The Nigerien military has yet to release further details on the perpetrators of the attack.
