One Killed in Fatal Tipper-Motorcycle Crash in Cross River, Two Arrested

A motorcyclist has been killed in a fatal road accident involving a tipper truck along the Ogoja–Benue highway in Cross River State.
The accident occurred at about 8:15 p.m. on August 23, 2026, and involved a tipper truck driven by Simon Gberkyo, a resident of Benue State, and a motorcycle ridden by Joseph Ushie of Utugang Community in Obudu Local Government Area.
According to the Police, the motorcyclist died at the scene after being run over by the tipper.
Preliminary information indicated that the accident may have been caused by another truck, with registration number YLA-969-ZY, which was allegedly wrongly parked along the highway.
Motor Police personnel visited the scene and cleared the road of the obstruction.
However, an angry mob reportedly prevented the Police from evacuating the deceased’s remains to the mortuary for autopsy, insisting that the body be buried immediately in accordance with traditional rites.
Two suspects have been arrested and taken into custody as Police commence investigation into the circumstances surrounding the crash.
The incident highlights the dangers posed by improperly parked heavy-duty vehicles on major highways and the need for strict enforcement of road-safety regulations.
It also underscores the importance of community cooperation with lawful forensic procedures, particularly in fatal accidents where autopsy and evidence preservation are necessary to establish the cause of death and determine responsibility.
