PDP Condemns Uromi Killings, Calls for State of Emergency in Edo
The Edo State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has condemned the mob killing of seven people in Uromi, Esan North-East Local Government Area, on Thursday, blaming the incident on the recently reorganized vigilante group established by Governor Monday Okpebholo.
In a statement released on Friday, Anthony Aziegbemi, the Chairman of the Edo PDP Caretaker Committee, accused the mob of being influenced by the state’s security forces.
According to the PDP, citizens of the state, feeling ignored by the government, are resorting to extrajudicial actions out of frustration.
This follows a series of killings, abductions, and rapes over recent months, which have created an atmosphere of fear and anger.
The PDP also expressed concern that the local population’s actions reflect the lack of respect for the rule of law shown by the state government.
With more than 100 lives lost in the last few months, the party has urged President Bola Tinubu to declare a state of emergency in the state, comparing the ongoing violence in Edo to the situation in Rivers State, which led to the declaration of an emergency there.
The party condemned the escalating violence, which they say has left the area deserted due to fears of further attacks.
They blamed Governor Okpebholo for failing to address the security situation and focusing instead on undoing the work of the previous administration.
In addition to the violence, the PDP accused the governor of neglecting security measures put in place by the previous administration.
The statement called on the President to urgently intervene, stressing the need for a state of emergency to restore peace and order to Edo State.
The party also called for an immediate halt to the needless deaths and for a focus on governance that prioritizes the welfare and safety of the people.
