President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has confirmed the deployment of Nigerian Air Force assets to the Republic of Benin following a failed military coup, commending the armed forces for safeguarding the neighbouring country’s 35-year-old democracy.
In a statement released on Sunday, the President said the intervention came in response to urgent requests from the Government of Benin, which sought Nigerian air support to dislodge coup plotters who had seized the National TV station and a military camp.
“Today, the Nigerian armed forces stood gallantly as a defender and protector of constitutional order in the Republic of Benin on the invitation of the government,” President Tinubu said, adding that the operation was conducted within the framework of the ECOWAS Protocol on Democracy and Good Governance.
According to the statement, the Benin authorities requested Nigerian fighter jets to take control of the country’s airspace, conduct surveillance, and carry out rapid intervention missions. The government also sought the deployment of ground forces under Beninese command to protect constitutional institutions and contain armed groups.
Chief of Defence Staff, General Olufemi Oluyede, confirmed that all requests were executed, with Nigerian ground forces now present in Benin to support security operations.
The coup, reportedly led by Colonel Pascal Tigri, attempted to suspend democratic institutions and seize control of state functions. Loyalist forces, with Nigerian support, regained control of the National TV station and key strategic points within hours.
President Tinubu praised the military for its swift and decisive response, saying the operation not only helped restore order in Benin but also strengthened regional security.
“Nigeria stands firmly with the government and people of the Republic of Benin,” he said, commending the armed forces for upholding democratic values and contributing to regional stability.
