Security forces  foil robbery on Abuja–Kaduna highway in Niger

Security forces in Niger state have foiled a robbery attempt by armed men along the Abuja–Kaduna Expressway near Gauraka village.

 

Zagazola gathered that the incident occurred on Sept. 7 at about 9:45 p.m., when armed robbers blocked the highway and attempted to dispossess travellers.

 

Security forces were immediately mobilized to the scene. However, on sighting the operatives, the suspects, who were driving an unregistered ash-coloured Volkswagen Golf car, opened fire sporadically and fled towards the Madalla–Abuja axis.

 

“The robbers had earlier punctured the right front tyre of a J5 vehicle with registration number RSH 216 XA, loaded with unripe bananas from Ekiti State en route Na’ibawa Fruits Market in Kano State,” it said.

 

Sources said  that three empty shells and two live rounds of AK-47 ammunition were recovered at the scene.

 

It said no casualty was recorded and the road was reopened for free flow of traffic.

 

According to the sources, high-visibility patrols have been intensified along the expressway and will be sustained to prevent future attacks.
