Several feared dead as passenger boat capsizes on Shiroro Dam in Niger State

A tragic boat mishap has occurred on the Shiroro Dam waterways in Niger State, with several passengers feared dead and rescue operations ongoing.
Sources told Zagazola Makama that the incident occurred around 10 a.m. on Saturday, July 26, when a local passenger boat capsized between Sherin Waterway and Kwata Market, Zumba, in Shiroro Local Government Area.
The boat, owned by one Mallam Danlami Musa of Shaita Village in Muya LGA, was conveying an unknown number of passengers from Shaita to the weekly market at Kwata when it capsized.
On receiving the report, a joint rescue team comprising Marine Police officers and local divers was immediately mobilised to the scene for search and rescue operations.
As of the time of filing this report, the number of casualties remains unconfirmed, but rescue efforts are ongoing to retrieve possible survivors and recover any bodies.
The Niger State Police Command has urged boat operators to adhere strictly to safety regulations, including the use of life jackets and proper passenger management.
