A 44-year-old suspect, Ogunyemi Opeyemi, who was in police custody for a case of conspiracy and stealing, has died after developing breathing difficulties while in detention at a divisional police station in Akute, Ogun State.

Zagazola Makama reports that the incident occurred in the early hours of Friday, during a routine duty tour by ASP Itodo Andrew, the Conflict Resolution Officer attached to the division.

According to police sources, at about 3:25 a.m., the officer visited the divisional cell and found the suspect gasping for breath.

He immediately alerted other personnel at the charge room, and the suspect was rushed to Tamara Hospital along Ajuwon Road, Akute, for medical attention.

However, the suspect was confirmed dead while receiving treatment.

“The Divisional Police Officer (DPO) visited the hospital, and photographs were taken for documentation. The body was later deposited at Olabisi Onabanjo University Teaching Hospital morgue in Sagamu for preservation and autopsy,” the police said.

The command said the complainant in the case was informed, and efforts were ongoing to trace the relatives of the deceased.

Meanwhile, the case has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department (SCIID), Abeokuta, for discreet investigation.
