Troops of the Nigerian Army have foiled an attempted theft at Zotman Mining Company in Ivo Local Government Area of Ebonyi State, with two suspected criminals reportedly shot dead during a pursuit.

Security sources told Zagazola Makama that the incident occurred at about 1:30 p.m. on Oct. 18, when troops of 24 Special Engineer Regiment/2 Welfare Battalion deployed at the mining company discovered that some hoodlums had attempted to steal materials but escaped before their arrival.

The troops reportedly pursued the fleeing suspects and engaged them, resulting in two of the suspects sustaining gunshot wounds.

The two suspects were later confirmed dead while being conveyed to a hospital, according to the sources.

Following the incident, some individuals allegedly mobilised a protest and attempted to damage the company's property.

The troops subsequently received reinforcement, contained the situation and intensified patrols around the area to prevent further violence and protect the facility.

The circumstances surrounding the attempted theft and the subsequent protest were not immediately clear.
