Troops of Operation Hadin Kai have foiled an attempted infiltration attack by suspected ISWAP terrorists on an Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camp in Damasak, Mobar Local Government Area of Borno State.
A military source said the incident occurred at about 1:34 a.m. on March 28, when the insurgents attempted to gain access to the camp through a Civilian Joint Task Force (CJTF) outpost.
The source disclosed that troops of Headquarters 5 Brigade, who were on standby, swiftly responded to the threat and engaged the attackers in a firefight.
“Troops responded promptly and engaged the terrorists, forcing them to abandon their attempt and flee the area,” the source said.
He added that during the encounter, a makeshift structure at the CJTF outpost was gutted by fire.
According to the source, troops conducted exploitation of the general area after the engagement, but no significant items were recovered.
The Acting Commander, Col. S.O. Bello, later addressed the displaced persons, assuring them of their safety and the military’s continued presence.
