Troops of Operation Hadin Kai have repelled an attack by suspected Boko Haram terrorists along the Pulka-Maraba-Kirawa road in Gwoza Local Government Area of Borno State, recovering a cache of logistics supplies and equipment.
Military sources said the encounter occurred at about 5:30 p.m. on June 16 when troops of the 153 Task Force Battalion deployed at Kirawa, while withdrawing from picketing duty, came under attack from a large group of terrorists riding on about 60 motorcycles.
The terrorists were reportedly moving from the Miyanti area towards Ngoshe when they opened fire on the troops at a crossing point along the Pulka-Maraba-Kirawa axis.
The troops swiftly responded with superior firepower, forcing the insurgents to retreat in disarray. Some of the fleeing terrorists reportedly escaped towards Miyanti, while others moved in the direction of the Ngoshe general area.
No casualties were recorded among the troops, while the number of casualties inflicted on the terrorists could not be immediately ascertained.
Following the engagement, troops recovered a significant quantity of items believed to be intended for terrorist logistics operations.
The recovered items included 817 rounds of 7.62mm x 54mm ammunition, three motorcycles, two solar panels, 102 sachets of salt, one motorcycle tyre, two motorcycle tubes, nine one-litre gallons of used engine oil, a tyre pump, two table fans, quantities of raw rice and assorted motorcycle spare parts.
