Army, Police Foil Bandits’ Attack, Neutralise Six in Zamfara

Joint security operatives involving Army and Police have foiled an attempted attack by armed bandits on communities in Maru Local Government Area of Zamfara State, neutralising six of the attackers during a fierce gun battle.

Sources disclosed that the incident occurred on June 9 when a large number of armed bandits, reportedly equipped with sophisticated weapons, stormed Kanoma Town and Gidan Daji Village in Kanoma District.

According to the sources, the attackers attempted to invade the communities before security operatives responded swiftly to distress calls from residents.

The sources said a joint team comprising troops under Operation Fansan Yamma, police tactical operatives from Maru Division, personnel of the Anti-Vice and Crime Response Unit (VCRU), and local vigilantes was immediately mobilised to the affected areas.

“Upon arrival, the security team engaged the bandits in a fierce exchange of gunfire and successfully repelled the attack.

“The superior firepower and coordinated response of the security operatives forced the bandits to abandon their mission,” the source said.

During the operation, six suspected bandits were neutralised.

The sources added that the deceased suspects were found on two motorcycles, with three occupants on each motorcycle.

Several other bandits reportedly escaped into nearby forests with varying degrees of gunshot wounds.

No casualty was recorded among security personnel or members of the affected communities during the encounter.

The joint patrols and surveillance operations had been intensified across the area to prevent a resurgence of criminal activities and to track fleeing members of the gang.

The authorities reassured residents of their commitment to sustaining offensive operations against armed bandits and other criminal elements threatening peace and security in Zamfara State.

They also urged members of the public to continue providing timely and credible information to support ongoing security efforts.
