Bandit camps force mass displacement in Mariga, Niger

By: Zagazola Makama

Residents of several communities in Mariga Local Government Area of Niger State have fled their homes following reports that armed bandits are camped in the area, sources told Zagazola

Credible security sources said that as of about 11:30 a.m. on Jan. 29, bandits had established bases in Kangi, Masabu, and Gulbin Boka villages.

The assailants have reportedly kidnapped an unspecified number of people from surrounding communities after failing to locate cattle for rustling.

“The hostages are being held in Kangi and Masabu villages, while residents of Lioji, Dusai, Kuimo, Gulbin Boka, and other nearby settlements have abandoned their homes,” a source said.

The source added that the Kontagora–Rijau road has been completely deserted by motorists due to fear of attacks along the route.

Security agencies in the area are reportedly monitoring the situation, and residents have been urged to exercise caution while authorities work to restore safety and recover the abducted persons.
