The Police Command in Enugu State has confirmed the killing of Rev. Fr. Matthew Eya, the Parish Priest of St. Charles Parish, Eha Ndiagu, who was shot dead by unidentified gunmen on Friday night.

Zagazola report that the priest was attacked around 9:10 p.m. by assailants riding on a motorcycle while it was raining heavily.

“On arrival at the scene, police operatives observed that the victim’s ash-coloured Toyota Camry (2008 model) with registration number ENU 145 SU was riddled with bullets, vandalised, and thoroughly searched by the attackers.

“Twelve expended shells of 7.62×39mm ammunition were recovered at the scene.

“The priest’s body was taken to Bishop Shanahan Hospital, Nsukka, where a medical doctor certified him dead on arrival. His remains were deposited at the hospital’s mortuary for preservation and autopsy,” the sources said.

The sources added that preliminary investigation was ongoing while the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) had been directed to take over the case.

“Intensified efforts are being made to track down the fleeing suspects and bring them to justice,” he added.
