The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lt.-Gen. Waidi Shaibu, has commissioned 49 welfare and infrastructure projects across Nigerian Army formations and units nationwide, including 11 projects in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), aimed at improving personnel welfare, accommodation and operational efficiency.
The COAS commissioned the projects on Thursday, October 29, 2026, with the newly constructed Officers Transit Accommodation at Life Camp, Abuja, among the key facilities inaugurated during the exercise.
The projects form part of the Nigerian Army's sustained efforts to address critical accommodation and infrastructure needs, improve the living and working conditions of officers, soldiers and their families, and strengthen operational readiness.
Speaking at the commissioning ceremony, Shaibu said the projects were consistent with his Command Philosophy, particularly the pillars of Sound Administration and the Soldier First Concept, which place personnel welfare at the centre of building a professional, adaptable, combat-ready and resilient force.
He stressed that adequate accommodation and functional infrastructure were essential to boosting morale, improving productivity and enhancing the Army's capacity to discharge its constitutional responsibilities in support of national security.
The Army Chief charged officers who would occupy the newly commissioned transit accommodation to maintain the facility and uphold the highest standards of discipline and responsibility.
He reaffirmed his commitment to sustaining investments in welfare and infrastructure across formations and units nationwide.
Shaibu also expressed appreciation to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, for his continued support to the Nigerian Army.
Transit Accommodation to Address Officers' Housing Challenges
Earlier, the Chief of Logistics (Army), Maj.-Gen. Adekunle Adeyinka, said the Officers Transit Accommodation was designed to address temporary housing challenges faced by officers posted to Army Headquarters and other formations in Abuja.
He explained that the facility comprises well-furnished, self-contained apartments equipped with modern amenities to provide comfortable accommodation for officers awaiting permanent allocation.
According to him, the project would improve personnel welfare and administrative efficiency by providing a suitable temporary living environment for officers and their families.
During the visit, Shaibu inspected ongoing infrastructure projects within Life Camp, including additional accommodation blocks, road rehabilitation and drainage works.
The COAS expressed satisfaction with the quality and pace of work but directed contractors to adhere strictly to approved timelines and specifications.
He emphasised the importance of delivering projects according to established standards to ensure durability, functionality and value for money.
The commissioning of the 11 projects in Abuja and 38 others across Nigerian Army formations and units nationwide reflects the service's coordinated efforts to address longstanding accommodation and infrastructure requirements.
The initiative also reinforces the Army's commitment to creating an enabling environment for effective training, administration and operations while improving the welfare of personnel and their families.
The Nigerian Army said the investments would contribute to strengthening morale, enhancing administrative effectiveness and sustaining operational readiness in support of its constitutional responsibilities.
