The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lt.-Gen. Waidi Shaibu, on Thursday led a high-powered delegation of heads of security agencies on an on-the-spot assessment of the security situation in Plateau, reaffirming commitment to restoring lasting peace in the state.
The visit comes amid ongoing efforts by security forces to stabilise parts of Jos and surrounding communities following recent unrest.
On arrival in Jos, the COAS was received by Gov. Caleb Mutfwang, in what observers described as a strong demonstration of civil-military cooperation aimed at addressing emerging security challenges.
During the visit, Shaibu received a comprehensive operational briefing from the General Officer Commanding (GOC) 3 Division and Commander, Joint Task Force Operation Enduring Peace, Maj.-Gen. Folusho Oyinlola.
The briefing highlighted ongoing operations and proactive measures being implemented in collaboration with other security agencies to contain threats, protect lives and property, and stabilise affected communities.
Speaking during the engagement, the COAS reassured residents of the Nigerian Army’s unwavering commitment to safeguarding all law-abiding citizens.
He urged members of the public to remain calm and vigilant, comply with the curfew imposed in parts of the state, and support security agencies with credible information to enhance ongoing operations and investigations.
Shaibu also interacted with community leaders and residents, emphasising the importance of collective responsibility in achieving sustainable peace.
“The Nigerian Army remains committed to working with other security agencies and stakeholders to ensure that Plateau remains safe and secure for all,” he said.
In his remarks, the Chairman of Jos North Local Government Area, Mr Dachung Bagos, commended the COAS for the timely visit, noting that the presence of the nation’s top military leadership would boost public confidence.
Similarly, the Councillor representing Naraguta ‘B’ Ward, Mr Ladi Dangyok, expressed appreciation for the swift intervention, describing it as a reassurance to affected communities.
Security observers say the visit underscores a coordinated approach by the Armed Forces and other stakeholders to address the evolving security situation in Plateau through both operational and community engagement strategies.
The Nigerian Army reiterated its resolve to sustain collaboration with the Plateau Government and other critical stakeholders to decisively tackle security challenges and strengthen peace across the state.
