Fulani man shot at Rakum Junction in Plateau by Berom Militia dies from bullet wounds

A 20-year-old Fulani man, Ismail Zakariyya, who was shot at Rakum Junction in Barkin Ladi Local Government Area of Plateau State, by Berom Militia has died from injuries sustained during the attack.
Security sources told Zagazola Makama that Zakariyya was attacked at about 6:45 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 27, 2026, while returning to his residence in Tafawa community, Riyom LGA.
The victim, who was reportedly a Point of Sale (POS) operator in Barkin Ladi, was said to have sustained a gunshot wound to his stomach after suspected armed assailants ambushed him and others along the route.
Troops of Sector 4, Operation Enduring Peace (OPEP), who responded to the incident, rescued Zakariyya and evacuated him to Sauki Clinic in Katako town for emergency treatment.
However, the victim later succumbed to the gunshot injuries while receiving treatment at the hospital.
The killing has further heightened security concerns in the area, where isolated attacks and reprisals involving members of different communities have continued to threaten civilian lives and livelihoods.
Security personnel have commenced efforts to identify and apprehend those responsible for the attack, while investigations are ongoing to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident.
The latest death adds to a growing pattern of isolated attacks along vulnerable routes in Plateau, reinforcing concerns over the need for sustained security presence, rapid response and intelligence-led operations to prevent further loss of civilian lives.
