The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, on Friday paid a courtesy visit to Rivers State Governor, Sir Siminalaye Fubara, at the Government House, Port Harcourt, where both leaders reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening collaboration in tackling security challenges and protecting critical national assets.

The visit formed part of activities marking the 163rd Nigerian Army Day Celebration (NADCEL 2026), which is being hosted in Rivers State.

Speaking during the visit, Lt.-Gen. Shaibu said he was in the state for the week-long celebration, which will culminate in the grand finale on July 6.

The Army Chief expressed appreciation to the Government and people of Rivers State for their support and hospitality, noting that the conducive environment created by the state had contributed significantly to the successful organisation of the annual celebration.

He also commended the Rivers State Government for its continued support to the Nigerian Army, stressing that sustained collaboration among the military, government and the citizenry remains vital in addressing emerging security threats and safeguarding critical national infrastructure.

Shaibu said closer cooperation between security agencies and state authorities would further enhance efforts to preserve peace, protect strategic assets and promote national development.

In his remarks, Gov. Fubara thanked the Chief of Army Staff for selecting Rivers State to host the 163rd Nigerian Army Day Celebration.

The governor commended Lt.-Gen. Shaibu for what he described as significant improvements in the security situation in the state since he assumed office as Chief of Army Staff, noting that the improved security environment had contributed to increased oil production and broader economic activities.

Fubara also praised the Nigerian Army for its sustained efforts in combating insurgency, pipeline vandalism and crude oil theft, describing the military as a critical partner in ensuring the nation’s security and economic stability.

He reaffirmed the commitment of the Rivers State Government to sustaining its support for the Nigerian Army, both in hosting NADCEL 2026 and in ongoing operations aimed at protecting critical national infrastructure and strengthening internal security across the state.
