NAF to Investigate Airstrikes on Civilian JTF and Vigilante

The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has launched an investigation into reports of civilian casualties, including members of the Civilian Joint Task Force (JTF) and local vigilantes, during recent airstrikes in Tungar Kara, Zurmi Local Government Area of Zamfara State.

The airstrikes, aimed at neutralizing bandits terrorizing communities in the area, successfully eliminated several targets and facilitated the rescue of some kidnap victims, according to a statement on Sunday by the NAF Director of Public Relations and Information, Air Vice Marshal Olusola Akinboyewa.

However, Akinboyewa expressed the NAF’s deep concern over allegations that the operation may have resulted in the unintended deaths of local vigilantes.

“As a responsible and professional custodian of airpower for the security of the nation, the NAF believes in the absolute value of the life of every Nigerian,” he said.

The NAF assured the public that a comprehensive investigation is underway to establish the facts and ensure accountability. The findings will be communicated to the public in due course, Akinboyewa added.

The air force reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding civilian lives while executing operations against banditry and insecurity in the North West.

“While our mission in the North West remains to combat banditry and restore peace, the safety and well-being of all Nigerians are of utmost importance,” the statement read.

The NAF pledged to continue working with relevant authorities to prevent harm to civilians and civilian infrastructure, emphasizing that all necessary measures are being taken to uphold its mandate responsibly.
