One killed, one injured in attack on illegal miners in Plateau

One person has been confirmed dead while another sustained serious injuries following an attack on illegal miners in Bokkos Local Government Area of Plateau State.

Security sources said the incident occurred at about 8:30 p.m. on March 14 at a mining site in Shorom village.

According to the sources, troops of Operation Safe Haven under Operation PEACE ENFORCEMENT PLATFORM deployed in Bokkos responded to a distress call following reports of an attack on illegal miners at the site.

On arrival, the troops discovered that two victims had been attacked by unidentified hoodlums armed with machetes.

The victims were said to have sustained severe machete cuts and were immediately evacuated for medical attention.

One of the victims was later confirmed dead while receiving treatment.

Security sources said efforts were ongoing to track and arrest those responsible for the attack.

Authorities have continued patrols and security operations across mining communities in Plateau State to curb illegal mining activities and associated criminal violence.
