The Special Task Force, Operation Safe Haven (OPSH), has flagged off the fifth edition of its Peace and Unity Football Tournament aimed at promoting harmony among diverse communities within its Joint Operations Area.

The tournament was declared open on Saturday by the General Officer Commanding 3 Division, Nigerian Army, and Commander OPSH, Maj.-Gen. Folusho Oyinlola, at the Rwang Pam Township Stadium in Jos.

Oyinlola, who was represented by the Commander, Sector 1 OPSH, Navy Capt. M.A. Fana, said the event was part of non-kinetic strategies deployed by the task force to foster unity among ethnic groups across Plateau, Bauchi and Southern Kaduna.

He said the tournament had gained the admiration of the local population over the years and had become a critical tool for social cohesion and peaceful coexistence.

“This initiative enhances civil-military relations and strengthens trust between communities and security agencies. OPSH remains open to exploring credible avenues for sustainable peace in its area of operation,” Oyinlola said.

He congratulated participating teams and encouraged them to display good sportsmanship throughout the tournament, while also urging continued public support for security agencies working to safeguard communities.

Speaking at the ceremony, the member representing Shendam/Qua’an Pan/Mikang Federal Constituency, Hon. John Dafaan, called on youths to look beyond their differences and embrace unity through sports.

He noted that football was globally recognised for its power to unite people of diverse backgrounds, and pledged to sponsor awards for the highest goal scorer, best assist creator, and best coach in the tournament.

Other dignitaries at the event, including government officials, youth leaders, and traditional and religious figures, commended OPSH for its continued efforts toward peacebuilding.

They encouraged residents to remain committed to peaceful coexistence and resist attempts by crisis merchants to instigate violence.

The  tournament will feature teams from 24 local government areas across Plateau, Bauchi and Southern Kaduna, as well as six tertiary institutions.

The opening match between Bassa LGA and Jos North LGA ended in victory for Jos North.
