The Plateau State Government has condemned the attack on traders returning from the Kara Livestock Market in Bukuru, Jos South Local Government Area, describing the incident as sad and unacceptable.
The government, in a statement signed by the Commissioner for Information and Communication, Rt. Hon. Joyce Lohya Ramnap, said it had directed security agencies to investigate the circumstances surrounding the attack, including the identities and motives of those responsible.
The incident involved traders identified as Fulani pastoralists who were returning from the Bukuru Kara Livestock Market when their vehicle came under gunfire around the State Low-Cost Housing area of Bukuru.
The attack left one person dead and seven others injured, according to a security report. The victims were evacuated for medical treatment.
Governor Caleb Manasseh Mutfwang expressed condolences to the families of those affected and urged residents to remain calm while security agencies conduct their investigation.
The government said it was particularly concerned about protecting lives and property within the Jos-Bukuru metropolis and had directed relevant agencies to strengthen security along vulnerable routes to prevent further attacks.
It called on communities, traders, pastoralists and other stakeholders to resist attempts to escalate tensions or deepen existing divisions.
“There must be no room for reprisal attacks or the taking of the law into individual hands,” the government said.
The government also urged residents to provide credible information to security authorities that could assist in identifying and apprehending those responsible for the attack.
It reaffirmed its commitment to creating a peaceful environment where all law-abiding residents can live, work and conduct legitimate businesses without fear.
The government further appealed to citizens to remain calm and continue with their lawful activities while investigations into the incident continue.
