Police Operatives Repel Bandits, Recover Two Motorcycles in Zamfara

The Nigerian Police Force in Zamfara have repelled an attack by armed bandits and recovered two motorcycles during a joint anti-banditry operation in Anka Local Government Area of the state.

The Zamfara State Police Command disclosed this in a statement issued on Thursday in Gusau.

According to the command, the operation was carried out on June 8 at about 4:00 p.m. by a joint security team comprising personnel of the Police’s Anti-Vice and Criminal Response Unit (VCRU), Zamfara State Community Protection Guards, Mobile Police Force and Civilian Security Volunteers.

The statement said the operatives, while on routine anti-banditry patrol along the Gadar Manya axis in Anka LGA, encountered a group of armed bandits attempting to cross the highway.

“On sighting the security team, the bandits opened fire, leading to an intense exchange of gunfire that lasted for about two hours.

“The operatives responded effectively, forcing the criminals to retreat into the bush with suspected gunshot wounds,” the statement said.

The command added that two motorcycles abandoned by the fleeing bandits were recovered at the scene of the encounter.

It noted that the latest recovery brought the total number of motorcycles seized from bandits during recent operations across the state to 12.

The police said efforts were ongoing to track down and apprehend the fleeing suspects.

It reiterated the command’s commitment to sustaining the ongoing campaign against banditry and other criminal activities in the state.

The command also appealed to residents to continue providing credible and timely information to security agencies to support efforts aimed at restoring lasting peace and security across Zamfara.
