Police operatives in Zamfara State have rescued a kidnap victim who escaped from captivity during a fierce exchange of gunfire between security personnel and armed bandits in the Bukuyum/Anka axis of the state.
Security sources disclosed on Thursday that the victim, who was earlier abducted from Dansadau community in Maru Local Government Area, regained his freedom following sustained pressure mounted on the kidnappers by security operatives.
According to the sources, the victim and one of his friends seized the opportunity created by the gun battle between security forces and the bandits to escape from the kidnappers’ custody.
The sources said the rescue occurred during ongoing security operations aimed at flushing out criminal elements operating within the Bukuyum and Anka general areas, which have witnessed repeated attacks by armed groups in recent months.
“The victim was kidnapped from Dansadau and was being held by the bandits before he managed to escape alongside his friend during an exchange of fire involving security personnel and the criminals.
“Both victims successfully escaped from captivity and are currently safe,” a security source said.
The source added that efforts were underway to reunite the rescued victim with his family.
According to the source, security agencies have established contact with the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) in Dansadau to facilitate the immediate identification and location of the victim’s parents and relatives.
