The Silent Heroes Awards Initiative (SHA) has commended the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Mr Olatunji Rilwan Disu, for what it described as transformational leadership, professionalism and commitment to strengthening public confidence in the Nigeria Police Force (NPF).

The founder of the initiative, Comrade Odita Sunday, said Disu’s leadership highlighted the importance of purposeful command, institutional reforms and people-oriented policing in addressing Nigeria’s evolving security challenges.

Odita, in a statement, said effective police leadership must go beyond operational effectiveness to embrace accountability, responsiveness and respect for the rights and safety of citizens.

He said the office of the Inspector-General of Police carried enormous responsibility, particularly amid growing public expectations for improved security, professional conduct and stronger community relations.

“Leadership in the security sector goes beyond occupying an office or issuing directives. It is about setting standards, inspiring personnel, strengthening institutions and building public trust through professional conduct and measurable results,” he said.

The SHA founder stressed that public trust remained central to effective policing, adding that sustained engagement between the police and communities was essential to crime prevention and improved security outcomes.

He said modern policing required intelligence gathering, operational efficiency, respect for human rights and collaboration with relevant stakeholders.

Odita also underscored the need to prioritise personnel welfare, continuous professional training and improved operational capacity to enable police officers to discharge their constitutional responsibilities effectively.

He said officers operating under difficult and dangerous conditions deserved institutional support, professional recognition and leadership that promoted integrity and excellence.

“The men and women who serve in the security sector make enormous sacrifices, often away from the public spotlight. Recognising their service and encouraging exemplary leadership are important steps towards building stronger and more responsive institutions,” he said.

According to him, the Silent Heroes Awards Initiative was established to recognise individuals whose leadership, service and contributions had made meaningful impacts in security, governance, community development and national advancement.

He said celebrating excellence could encourage responsible leadership, strengthen professionalism and inspire other Nigerians to contribute to national development.

Odita added that recognition should not be based solely on titles and positions but should reflect character, commitment to duty, institutional impact and service to humanity.

He urged Nigerians to support efforts to strengthen the country’s security institutions, noting that addressing insecurity required cooperation among government agencies, communities, civil society organisations and the private sector.

The SHA founder expressed optimism that sustained reforms, professional leadership and stronger partnerships between the police and citizens would contribute to improved public safety and confidence in law enforcement.

He reaffirmed the initiative’s commitment to promoting excellence, integrity and service, urging public officers to remain focused on their responsibilities to Nigerians.

Odita said the ultimate measure of leadership in the security sector was its impact on citizens’ lives, institutional effectiveness and public confidence in those entrusted with their protection.
