Independent sources familiar with the 2010 military operation against the infamous Abia-born kidnap kingpin, Obioma Nwankwo, popularly known as “Osisikankwu,” have revealed that Staff Sergeant Amoke Simon, a serving soldier, allegedly presented a false narrative to the Abia State Government about his role in the high-profile operation.

Eyewitnesses and officers directly involved in the Aba operation told Zagazola Makama that Amoke Simon was not part of the team that conducted the raids leading to the arrest and neutralization of “Osisikankwu.”

They stated that the operation, which dismantled the gang terrorizing Aba and surrounding communities between 2008 and 2010, was executed by a coordinated group of army personnel and security operatives without his involvement. Despite this, the sources said, Amoke Simon approached the Abia State Government, claiming to have played a leading role in the mission.

Acting on his account, Governor Alex Otti reportedly visited the soldier at his country home in Nvosi, Isiala Ngwa South Council, and pledged to sponsor him for overseas medical treatment to aid his recovery from injuries sustained during unrelated military service in the North-East.

Those who were present during the Aba operations expressed concern that the soldier’s claims misrepresented the actual contributions of those involved. “He was never on the ground during the Aba raids.

The real officers and soldiers risked their lives to dismantle the gang. His narrative is inconsistent with operational reports and testimonies of those who were there,”said one source.

Sources further indicated that Amoke Simon falsely claimed that he refused a N50 million bribe from “Osisikankwu” during the operation, a detail that could not be corroborated by any of the officers who participated in the raids.

They stressed that the true credit for the operation belongs to the team that directly tracked and apprehended the notorious kidnap kingpin.

While Governor Otti’s gesture in honouring the soldier was well-intentioned, it pointed to the need for careful verification of claims before recognition is given. Sources said misrepresentation of participation in high-profile security operations could undermine morale among those  who risk their lives to maintain peace and security.

The Aba operation remains a model of coordination, professionalism, and courage. Misrepresenting one’s role not only diminishes the sacrifices of others but could also encourage dishonesty within the ranks.”

This revelation sheds light on the importance of independent verification in recognizing military service and ensuring that commendations and support are awarded based on factual contributions, particularly in operations with significant impact on public safety.
