Suspected motorcycle thief dies after mob attack in Benue community

A man suspected of stealing a motorcycle has died after being attacked by an angry mob at Wannune Market in Tarka Local Government Area of Benue State.
Security sources told Zagazola Makama that the incident occurred on Jan. 25 at about 10:00 a.m. when the suspect, whose identity has yet to be established, was alleged to have stolen a motorcycle in the busy market.
According to the sources, some residents apprehended the suspect and subjected him to mob action before dispersing with the motorcycle prior to the arrival of security operatives.
“The Divisional Police Officer in Tarka mobilised a patrol team to the scene, but the crowd had already dispersed with the motorcycle before they got there,” the sources said.
The sourcss added that the unconscious suspect was rushed to the General Hospital in Wannune for medical attention but was confirmed dead while receiving treatment. His body has since been deposited at the hospital mortuary.
Efforts are ongoing to identify and arrest those involved in the mob action, while the State Criminal Investigation Department has commenced investigation into the incident.
