Troops of the Nigerian Army have thwarted an attempt to supply arms and ammunition to terrorist elements in Kwara State, recovering weapons, ammunition and a motorcycle abandoned by fleeing suspects.
Military sources disclosed that the operation was conducted on June 4 following credible intelligence regarding the movement of suspected gun runners along the axis between Mutukun and Saminaka villages in Patigi Local Government Area of the state.
Acting on the intelligence, troops of 22 Brigade deployed to the area and laid an ambush along the suspected route being used by the gun runners.
The operation forced the suspects to abandon their mission and flee upon sighting the troops, leaving behind weapons and other items.
Items recovered during the operation included one AK-47 rifle, one single-barrel gun, nine rounds of 7.62mm special ammunition, 18 rounds of single-barrel cartridges and one motorcycle believed to have been used by the suspects.
According to military sources, the swift response by the troops disrupted what is believed to have been an attempt to deliver the weapons and ammunition to terrorist elements operating within the area.
The recovered arms, ammunition and motorcycle have been taken into military custody for further investigation and exploitation.
Security authorities said efforts were ongoing to track down and apprehend the fleeing suspects, while intelligence operations have been intensified to uncover the network behind the attempted arms supply.
The successful operation highlights the growing effectiveness of intelligence-driven military actions aimed at disrupting arms trafficking routes and denying criminal and terrorist groups access to weapons used to perpetrate violence.
Troops continue to maintain aggressive patrols and targeted operations across the region as part of ongoing efforts to enhance security and protect local communities.
