Yobe to Host 5th Lake Chad Basin Governors’ Forum on Climate, Security, Development

Yobe State Governor, Hon. Mai Mala Buni, will host the 5th Lake Chad Basin Governors’ Forum from Jan. 29 to 31 at the Indimi International Conference Centre, University of Maiduguri, Borno State.

The forum, with the theme “Rebuilding the Lake Chad Basin: Consolidating Gains, Commitment to Peace, Cross-Border Cooperation, Security, and Sustainable Development for a Resilient Community,” aims to address pressing regional challenges including climate change, security, and socio-economic development.

The event, organized by the Lake Chad Basin Commission (LCBC) in partnership with the African Union Commission (AUC) and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), will bring together governors and regional leaders from across the Lake Chad Basin.

In addition to Governor Buni, participants will include the governors of Borno and Adamawa States in Nigeria, as well as their counterparts from Diffa Region in Niger Republic, Lac and Hadjer-Lamis Provinces in Chad, and the Far North and North Regions of Cameroon.

The forum is expected to attract over 500 participants, including government officials, representatives of Regional Economic Communities, NGOs, CSOs, traditional leaders, technical partners, UN agencies, and donors.

According to the organizers, discussions will focus on fostering cross-border cooperation, climate resilience, food security, human capital development, peacebuilding, and security.

Governor Buni emphasized the significance of the event, stating that it provides an opportunity to consolidate efforts toward resolving the complex challenges facing the region.

“This forum will strengthen regional collaboration and develop long-term solutions to promote peace, sustainable development, and resilience in the Lake Chad Basin,” Buni said.

The Lake Chad Basin, home to over 30 million people across Cameroon, Chad, Niger, and Nigeria, has faced challenges ranging from environmental degradation to insecurity caused by insurgency.

The outcomes of the forum are expected to enhance ongoing efforts to improve the region’s socio-economic conditions while addressing climate and security concerns.

As regional leaders gather in Maiduguri for this critical summit, stakeholders are optimistic that the deliberations will yield actionable outcomes to strengthen the Lake Chad Basin’s future.
