The Headquarters 3 Division, Nigerian Army, on Sunday organized the 2024 edition of the West African Social Activities (WASA) for its officers, soldiers, and their families at the Rhino Sports Pavilion, Maxwell Khobe Cantonment, Jos.

The colourful event, an annual tradition marking the end of training activities for the year, attracted dignitaries, including government officials, security and paramilitary agency heads, traditional rulers, captains of industries, and retired senior military officers.

The Special Guest of Honour, Plateau State Governor, Barr. Caleb Mutfwang, represented by the Commissioner for Lands, Survey, and Town Planning, Barr. Peter Nyam Gai, commended the significance of WASA as a unifying platform for personnel and their families.

“This gathering is a testament to the bonds we share and the unparalleled hospitality, support, and cooperation the people of Plateau State extend to security agencies,” Mutfwang said.

He praised the cultural displays and performances, noting that they highlighted Nigeria’s rich heritage and affirmed the state’s commitment to promoting tourism and cultural heritage.

In his address, Maj.-Gen. AE Abubakar, General Officer Commanding (GOC) 3 Division and Commander of Operation SAFE HAVEN, described WASA as a cherished tradition in the Nigerian Army, reflecting its commitment to fostering camaraderie among personnel and their families.

“WASA is not just a celebration but a tradition that dates back to our pre-independence days,” Abubakar said.

He commended the collaborative efforts of security agencies in maintaining peace and security in the region and urged personnel to remain security-conscious during the festive season.

The GOC also cautioned soldiers participating in Operation GOLDEN PEACE to uphold professionalism, warning that violations of the military’s Code of Conduct would attract sanctions.

Maj.-Gen. Abubakar expressed gratitude to the Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lt.-Gen. OO Oluyede, for his support in improving working conditions and enhancing troop welfare, as well as for facilitating training activities that have sharpened the professional skills of soldiers in the division.

The event featured highlights such as cultural displays, a tug-of-war competition, award presentations to outstanding personnel, and the lowering of flags to mark the conclusion of the year’s activities.

The evening ended with a bonfire, symbolizing unity and strengthening the bond of brotherhood among personnel and their families.
