AES Opens Borders to ECOWAS Nationals
The Alliance of Sahel States (AES) has announced that nationals from the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) are now permitted to enter, move, reside, establish, and exit AES territories, in accordance with existing national regulations.
This decision comes after Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger key members of the AES formally withdrew from ECOWAS in January 2024, citing disagreements over sanctions and political pressures.
Despite their exit from ECOWAS, the AES’s recent move to open borders to ECOWAS nationals indicates a commitment to regional integration and cooperation. This policy aims to facilitate the free movement of people and goods, potentially enhancing economic and social ties between AES and ECOWAS member states.
The AES has emphasized that all movements must comply with national laws and regulations in force within their territories. This measure seeks to balance openness with the need to maintain security and public order.
Observers note that this development could foster improved relations between the AES and ECOWAS, promoting stability and economic growth in the West African region. However, the effectiveness of this policy will depend on its implementation and the cooperation of all parties involved.
The AES’s decision reflects an understanding of the interconnectedness of West African nations and the importance of collaboration in addressing shared challenges such as security threats and economic development.
