The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lt.-Gen. Waidi Shaibu, has commended the successful joint operation between Nigerian and United States forces that led to the elimination of a top ISIS commander operating in Africa.
Shaibu gave the commendation on Monday at the opening of the Chief of Army Staff First Bi-Annual Conference 2026 in Abuja.
The COAS described the operation as a major breakthrough in global counter-terrorism efforts and a testament to the growing effectiveness of international military cooperation against terrorism.
According to him, the successful operation demonstrated the commitment of Nigeria and its international partners to denying terrorist groups safe havens within the African continent.
He noted that the operation, which targeted ISIS second-in-command Abu-Bilal al-Minuki, was carried out through effective intelligence sharing, strategic coordination and joint operational planning.
“The successful execution of the recent joint operation involving Nigerian and United States forces is a significant achievement in the fight against terrorism.
“It underscores the importance of collaboration, intelligence sharing and joint operational synergy in addressing transnational security threats,” he said.
Shaibu stated that the elimination of the terrorist leader would significantly weaken ISIS operational networks and reduce the group’s capacity to coordinate attacks within the region.
He said the operation also highlighted the professionalism and operational capability of Nigerian troops working alongside international partners.
The COAS reiterated the Nigerian Army’s commitment to sustaining aggressive operations against terrorist groups and other criminal organisations threatening national and regional security.
According to him, terrorism has become a global threat requiring collective action, cooperation and sustained military pressure.
He stressed that the Nigerian Army would continue to strengthen partnerships with allied nations and security organisations to enhance operational effectiveness.
Shaibu noted that recent operational gains recorded in the North-East and other theatres were products of improved intelligence, enhanced troop morale and better inter-agency coordination.
He further assured Nigerians that the Armed Forces remained determined to eliminate all threats to national peace and stability.
The COAS commended officers and soldiers involved in the operation for their courage, professionalism and dedication to duty.
He also appreciated the support of international partners, particularly the United States, in the areas of intelligence, training and operational support.
Shaibu urged troops to remain vigilant and sustain ongoing offensives against terrorists, bandits and other criminal elements across the country.
The conference was attended by senior military officers, heads of establishments, commanders, representatives of security agencies and members of the media.
