COAS Shaibu honoured for advancing defence research, innovation

The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lt. Gen. Waidi Shaibu, has received the Distinguished Personality Award for his contributions to defence research and innovation.
Shaibu was honoured on Wednesday, Aug. 26, 2026, at the National Defence College (NDC) Course 34 Graduation Dinner and Awards Night in Abuja.
The award recognised his support for defence research and innovation, particularly efforts aimed at improving military operations and developing the capabilities of the Nigerian Army.
According to the organisers, the recognition also reflects the COAS’ commitment to leveraging research, operational experience and innovation to strengthen military decision-making and improve the Army’s response to emerging security challenges.
The ceremony was attended by Service Chiefs, senior military officers, members of the Federal Executive Council and other national security stakeholders.
It also marked the successful completion of NDC Course 34 and highlighted the importance of professional military education, defence research and inter-service cooperation in protecting Nigeria’s national interests.
The recognition further underscores Lt. Gen. Shaibu’s efforts to build a professional, adaptable, combat-ready and resilient Nigerian Army.
It is also expected to encourage stronger collaboration between operational formations and defence research institutions in developing practical responses to Nigeria’s evolving security challenges.
