The Minister of Defence and immediate past Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa (Rtd) has charged newly promoted senior officers of the Nigerian Army to justify the confidence reposed in them by embracing higher responsibility, strategic leadership and unwavering professionalism.
Speaking at a decoration ceremony at the Nigerian Army Officers Mess in Abuja on Wednesday, the minister said the elevation of the officers to the rank of Major General marked “an important milestone in their careers and a testament to discipline, sacrifice and distinguished service to the nation.”
He said the promoted officers represented some of the finest leadership within the Armed Forces, adding that he personally knew many of them from their tours in difficult operational theatres, including Sector 3 Monguno.
“I commend you all. For the Chief of Army Staff well done. This is a clear indication that hard work pays,” he said. “For those coming behind, the message is simple: work hard. The Armed Forces is highly professional, and we only reward dedication and commitment.”
The Minister noted that the promotion process remained rigorous, competitive and credible, adding that the Army Council had continued to uphold fairness in elevating officers of merit.
He reminded the newly promoted Major Generals that their new positions placed them at the strategic decision-making level, where their actions would directly influence the future direction and operational effectiveness of the Nigerian Army.
“Nigeria’s security landscape dominated by terrorism, insurgency and evolving threats demands leaders who are visionary, adaptable and resolute,” he said. “Your track records show that you are prepared for these responsibilities.”
He emphasised the need for jointness and inter-service cooperation, warning that no arm of the military could succeed in isolation.
“National security requires seamless cooperation among the services. Nigerians are demanding results, and time is of the essence,” he said.
The Minister also paid tribute to recently retired senior officers, who he said left behind legacies of mentorship and operational excellence.
“We are retired now. The mantle is on you. You must not fail yourselves, your families or the nation,” he said.
He appreciated the families of the promoted officers for their sacrifices, patience and support despite long separations and uncertainties associated with military service.
