DHQ: Over 20 ISWAP Fighters Killed in Another Joint Nigeria–US Air Operation in Borno

The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) says over 20 suspected ISIS/ISWAP fighters have been neutralised in a coordinated air operation involving Nigerian forces and the United States Africa Command (USAFRICOM) in Borno State.
The operation, which targeted terrorist enclaves in the Metele general area of Northern Borno, was part of ongoing counterterrorism efforts aimed at degrading insurgent capabilities in the North-East.
This is contained in a statement issued on Monday by the Director of Defence Information, Maj.-Gen. Samaila Uba.
Uba said the strikes were carried out following credible intelligence indicating the convergence and movement of terrorist fighters within the area.
He explained that multiple airstrikes were executed on identified terrorist positions, resulting in the killing of more than 20 ISWAP/ISIS fighters.
According to him, the operation forms part of sustained joint efforts between the Armed Forces of Nigeria and US Africa Command to disrupt terrorist networks and deny them freedom of action.
“The Defence Headquarters, in close coordination with United States Africa Command, wish to update the general public on the continuation of coordinated operations against ISIS militants across the North-East Nigeria, with additional air strike operations successfully executed in the general area of Metele,” he said.
Uba added that the latest offensive came days after the reported neutralisation of a top ISIS commander, Abu-Bilal al-Minuki, in similar coordinated operations.
He said the military was intensifying efforts to dismantle terrorist infrastructure, eliminate high-value targets and prevent the regrouping of insurgent elements in the region.
According to him, the sustained air operations are aimed at denying terrorists safe havens and restricting their movement across the North-East theatre.
“The ongoing operations follow the neutralisation of ISIS commander Abu-Bilal al-Minuki and are part of sustained efforts to disrupt terrorist networks, remove them from the battlefield and deny the terrorists any safe haven within Nigeria,” he said.
The DHQ reaffirmed the commitment of the Armed Forces of Nigeria to defending the country’s sovereignty and ensuring the safety of citizens across all regions.
It warned that terrorist elements would continue to face decisive military action until they are completely neutralised.
“The Armed Forces of Nigeria will continue to aggressively defend the sovereignty, security and territorial integrity of the nation. Terrorists who threaten our citizens, communities and national stability will be located and defeated.
“There will be no safe haven for all terrorists anywhere in Nigeria,” the statement added.
The military assured Nigerians of sustained operations in collaboration with international partners to ensure lasting peace and stability in the North-East and other affected areas.
