Farmer allegedly kills herder’s cow over crop destruction in Kaduna

A farmer has allegedly killed a cow belonging to a Fulani herder following a dispute over alleged destruction of crops at Sorian Village in Kauru Local Government Area of Kaduna State.
Security sources told Zagazola Makama that the incident occurred at about 7:40 a.m. on Sept. 23, 2026, when troops of Sector 7, Operation Enduring Peace (OPEP), deployed at Madakiya, responded to a report of an attack on cattle.
The source said the cow belonged to a Fulani herder, identified as Mr Samaila Lawal, while the farmer was identified as Mr Nathaniel Andrew.
Upon arrival at the location, the troops confirmed that the cow had been killed, while the farmer had fled the area.
Preliminary information indicated that the farmer allegedly attacked the cattle after accusing the animals of destroying his crops.
Security forces have commenced efforts to locate and apprehend the suspect, with a view to facilitating an amicable resolution of the dispute and preventing possible reprisal action.
Community leaders and other relevant stakeholders are expected to support efforts to de-escalate tensions arising from the incident.
