Large farmlands belonging to 13 farmers destroyed in Plateau

Large farmlands belonging to 13 farmers have been destroyed in Jol Community, Riyom Local Government Area of Plateau State, in an incident that has heightened concerns over recurring farmer-herder tensions in the area.
Security sources told Zagazola Makama that the incident occurred at about 8:40 a.m. on Sept. 23, 2026, when troops of Sector 6, Operation Enduring Peace (OPEP), deployed at Dakku, responded to a report of the destruction of farmlands.
The troops, upon arrival at the location, confirmed that large portions of the farms had been destroyed.
Preliminary information indicated that the destruction was allegedly carried out by suspected Fulani herders, although security forces are working to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident and identify those responsible.
Efforts are ongoing to track and apprehend the perpetrators.
Meanwhile, an emergency meeting has been convened involving Fulani leaders and indigenous community representatives in the area, as part of efforts to find a lasting solution to the recurring destruction of farmlands and reprisal actions in the local government.
Security sources said the engagement is expected to help de-escalate tensions, prevent retaliatory attacks and strengthen community-based mechanisms for resolving disputes between farmers and herders.
