FG restates commitment to fight against terrorism, orders probe into recent military operations

The Federal Government says it remains firmly committed to defeating terrorism and banditry across the country, warning against attempts to exploit tragic incidents to undermine the Armed Forces and national security efforts.
The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, stated this on Wednesday in Abuja, noting that government was intensifying both military and humanitarian responses in affected regions.
Idris said the Federal Government was working closely with the Borno and Yobe State Governments, as well as the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) and State Emergency Management Agencies (SEMAs), to provide relief support to families affected by recent military operations against terrorists in parts of the North-East.
He said government had also ordered a full and independent investigation into the incidents to review intelligence processes, operational targeting, and execution procedures, with a view to identifying possible gaps and ensuring accountability where necessary.
According to him, the protection of civilian lives remains a core obligation of the Armed Forces, adding that ongoing counter-terrorism operations would continue with greater precision, accountability, and determination until lasting peace is achieved.
The minister explained that the recent precision airstrike conducted by the Nigerian Air Force under Operation Hadin Kai at the Jilli axis in Gubio Local Government Area of Borno State on April 11, 2026, was based on credible intelligence and not an indiscriminate attack.
He said sustained intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance operations had identified the area as a terrorist hub, adding that the location had previously been linked to insurgent activity and illicit markets used by armed groups.
Idris further stated that civilians were being urged to strictly observe security advisories, avoid restricted areas, and cooperate fully with security agencies to prevent avoidable casualties during ongoing operations.
He also called on the media to exercise responsibility in reporting security matters, warning that unverified reports could mislead the public, embolden terrorist groups, and undermine national security efforts.
The minister highlighted recent convictions of Boko Haram and ISWAP suspects as part of government efforts to strengthen accountability in the fight against terrorism, noting that some offenders had received life sentences for providing material support to insurgent groups.
He extended condolences to families affected by the recent incidents and sympathised with those injured, assuring that government remained committed to justice and the protection of civilian lives.
