Gunmen kill 11 at wake in Plateau attack
Gunmen have attacked Ruwi village in Butura District of Bokkos Local Government Area of Plateau State, killing 11 people and injuring several others.
The Police Public Relations Officer in Plateau, Mr. Alfred Alabo, confirmed the attack in a statement on Friday in Jos.
He said the assailants stormed the village at about 9:20 p.m. on Thursday, opening fire on residents who were gathered for a wake.
“The attack resulted in the unfortunate loss of lives, while many others sustained varying degrees of injuries.
“Upon receiving the report at about 10:00 p.m., the Commissioner of Police, Mr. Emmanuel Adesina, immediately directed the Divisional Police Officer in Bokkos to mobilise officers to the scene,” he said.
Alabo added that the commissioner later visited the community to assess the situation and commiserate with bereaved families.
The Bokkos Cultural Development Council (BCDC) also confirmed the casualties, describing the attack as tragic.
Reacting to the incident, the Plateau State Government condemned the killings and urged security agencies to ensure the perpetrators were brought to justice.
The Commissioner for Information, Mrs. Joyce Ramnap, appealed to residents of the area to remain calm and refrain from taking the law into their own hands.
She reiterated the government’s commitment to the security of lives and property across the state.
